Am just back from two great music festivals. Apollo Bay in Victoria and Byron Bay in NSW. It rained in both places but fortunately this didn’t spoil the show!! Apollo Bay is great for venues around the town and it’s right on the coast. Highlights for me included the Live to Air broadcast of Twang by 3RRR FM. Denise Hylands interviewed all my favourites – the Willson Pickers, Chris Smithers, and The Flatlanders. Byron highlights were Lyle Lovett, Old Crow Medicine Show, The Greencards, The Wagons, Kev Carmody and Friends, The Willson Pickers, Patty Larkin and Justin Townes Earle. Unfortunately at times you could hear the music leaking from the other venues and maybe they could have turned down the volume a touch, but all up a great week of live music.

Today was a celebration of newness in two hemispheres – Queensland Australia and the British folk scene. Brett featured the new album Home – a celebration of new Indigenous musicians and bands from Queensland (his home state) complied by www.qmusic.com.au . We share a love of Seaman Dan who appears on Home. He also featured some tracks from a new favourite - the Byron Bay based reggae band Fyah Walk, last seen at Womadelaide 2010. To learn more go to http://www.myspace.com/fyahwalk.

I had an immigrant moment – must be because it is so green here around Alice Springs – focussing on some new folks sounds coming out of Britain. A long way from the 24 verse dirges and sea shanties sung by someone with a digit shoved firmly in their right ear (I guess dirges are challenging to stay in tune for) at the Grimsby Folk Club in Northern England, which I used to frequent as a teenager. We did have some great performers who did attend, including Vin Garbutt who is currently visiting Central Australia.

Joy – still with the sounds of Womadelaide ringing in her ears, played a taster of sounds from Catalonia, Finland, Hungary, Ethiopia and Palestine. More to come in coming weeks but if you want to catch up with all the bands, websites and photos, go to http://www.womadelaide.com.au/categories/1/artists . I loved the theatre of Ojos de Brujo, the relaxing sounds of Lepisto and Lehti (playing in the gentle rain under the magnificent Moreton Bay Figs, the vibrancy and joyous interaction of Dub Colossus (especially in their dance workshop) and the great privilege of seeing Ravi Shankar on his final trip to Australia (hi is now 90 and deciding to stop touring!). He said Womadelaide reminded him of Woodstock – with a few less people !!
