I’ve been enjoying the last few weeks sharing the presentation of The Big Bang Theory with Brett, who is relatively new to Alice Springs and an new member of 8CCC. Its been great hearing some of his choice of music and as we are exploring together new sounds to our ears!
I’ve been a bit slack with giving you the track listings and web links but as from this week, we are back on track!
If you have suggestions for performers and styles of music you would like to hear, please drop an email to 8ccc@netspeed.com.au or phone us during the show on 08 8952 7771 with a request.

An eclectic mix on Vashti’s Voice this week.
In the lead up to Water Week, we heard about the rainwater HOG http://rainwaterhog.com/, designed by Sydney-based architect, Sally Dominguez and DIY business operator, Sandra Dobbin’s response to the lack of practical DIY tools for women to set up diywoman http://www.diywoman.com.au/, and at the same time raise significant amounts of money for breast cancer research.
On my visit to Kalgoorlie-Boulder this week I picked up a copy of Kalgirls – a calendar put together by the women of the Ulysses Club, a motorbiking club whose motto is “grow old disgracefully”., as a fun fundraiser for the Ulysses Club Arthritis Research Fund, and a challenge to people’s perceptions about who can and should be calendar girls! If you would like to get a copy or find out more, contact one of the women members of the committee at http://www.kalwaulysses.com/Committee%20Members.htm
We featured the new album by multi-ligual singer songwriter Miriam Lieberman – Wakeli recorded in the West African country of Guinea, last year http://www.miriamsong.com.au/
Vashti’s Voice is a weekly program by women for women, which has been going to air in Central Australia and the Barkly for over 13 years. the current collective members are Kate Lawrence, Nadine Williams and myself, Joy Taylor. Come and join us!
Today’s show featured some leaders and innovators on the world music scene and included a conversation with John Huigen from Desert Knowledge Australia about a new Alice Springs intercultural leadership development program. In 2010 we will meet some of the mentors and mentees in the program here on 8CCC.
For more information about the program and the call out for mentors for the program visit http://www.desertknowledge.com.au/dka/index.cfm?attributes.fuseaction=desertLeadership

Thought it was a about time I put a post on the website. Ove the last month I’ve been featuring a few new names. Jordie Lane was playing at the Norfolk Hotel in Fremantle recently and I just happened to be there! So I bought a copy of his new CD called Sleeping Patterns and I’ve been playing it ever since. He’s young but he sounds and writes like an old soul. He also produced a great album with a Canadian gal, Tracy McNeil under the band name Fireside Bellows. So listeners have been hearing this album over the last month or so. Also Buddy and Julie Miller’s new album, “Written in Chalk” featuring guest appearances from Emmylou Harris, Robert Plant and Patty Griffin. I still haven’t tired of Teddy Thompson’s ”Upfront and Down Low” or Eilen Jewell’s “Sea of Tears”. Today I played Justin Townes Earle just to get in the mood for his Australian tour starting next week. I’ll be in Melbourne for next Friday’s gig at the Thornbury Theatre. I saw him last year at the Grace Emily in Adelaide and have been talking about him ever since. A show not to be missed!! It’s a pity these gigs are a bit more costly these days when you live in Alice Springs. I ordered a copy of JTE’s new album “Midnight at the movies and it still “hasn’t arrived. So that will be the feature of next week’s show. Hopefully a signed copy!
Hi, a quick visit to Spain this week brought some great new sounds to our ears, especially from Catalonia and a couple of surprises like I’d always thought Pascal Comelade was from France, which he is. Confused well so am I. Clearly I need to do some more investigation of one of Catalonia’s favourite sons …. at least a good track listing can be found at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pascal_Comelade
Interested in finding out more of the music of Spain? Get started at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Music_of_spain Great thing about wikipedia is if you then find out something more or know something of interest yourself, you can add it to the collective knowledge. Bit like here really. If you have an idea on countries or music styles you would like explored on tte Big Bang Theory let me know. And thanks for the suggestions so far.
Obrint Pas – Malaguenya de Barxeta
Peret – La Fama no me Cambiara
08001 – Ras El Ma
Dumbala Canalia – Vals Virgil
La Macanita – Buleria
Marina Rossell – El Meu Avi
Ana Salazar – El Acordeonista
Kaulakau – Maese
Pascal Comelade – Noia de Porcellana
Yasmin Levy – The girl of the flowers (for Christine Burke)
Ojos de Brujo – Tantas Flores
And then for an esoteric pick …..
U Srinivas and Michael Brook – Dance (for Beanie Festival volunteers and the Araluen staff supporting the Beanie Festival as they dance through a colourful, busy and joyous weekend at the Araluen Cultural Centre in Alice Springs)
1 Giant Leap – Passion (for Tim Rollason – Happy Brithday!)
Susheela Raman – Heart and Soul (for the members of the Beanie Bandits – thanks for your enthusiasm and willingness to perform on friday evening at the beanie festival opening)
Brian Eno and David Byrne – Help me somebody (cos I just love it …)
Oojami – Wicked and Wild (for Megg Kelham, local historian, to wish you good luck with the presentations about the history of the Old Gaol, next month at the National Pioneer Women’s Hall of Fame in Alice Springs)
Lura – Marinhero
The view from Madelaine’s Couch – Lula Boogaloo (for Fur and Chloe who welcomed my dog Idgie into their pack, ensuring that Idgie had a stress free time while my partner and I were moving house!) Also for the RSPCA who are doing a promotion at the moment with the Alice Springs Town Council to encourage dog owners to get registered, so you can do the Lula Boogaloo down to the council offices in Todd Street and sign your dog up.
Have a wonderful week
Joy
