This week’s show features Alice’s own couturieres – eight women who are creating designer wear with a difference. Everything is recycled, making it unique, making it very Alice, making it sustainable couture. After very little sleep, oodles of creative energy and on the verge of the opening parade of “Do you give a frock?” Sustainable Couture 2010, Joy Taylor catches up with some of the members at Central Craft. Other members are Kathy Frank, Franca Frederiksen, Philomena Hali and Sarah Hill. The Opening Parade is at Central Craft, Araluen Precinct, Alice Springs Sunday 18 July at 3pm. The exhibition continues till 1 August.
- Nicky Schonkala, Julie Millerick, Rebecca Griffith and Carmel Ryan – 4 of the 8 members of Sustainable Couture 2010
Listen to Vashti’s Voice – the women’s program - Saturdays 12 – 1pm on 8CCC 102.1FM
Hi, the theme of this week’s show has been people working together bringing their skills, creativity and knowledge together to make something new – across different musical genres, different continents, and also in your own backyard you might find the ideal person to connect with and work with. Sometimes these collaborations have been a one-off experiment and sometimes have forged enduring musical relationships. The choices for the show reflect all of these variations and more. I had fun selecting them and I hope you enjoy exploring more about the artists below.

Hi, I was on deck for the first time in a few weeks with Vashti’s Voice. While I was away the Federal Government has proposed some changes to mental health care in Australia – with some significant implications for women who use services, and for services providers in Central Australia. We heard some interviews and discussion on this prepared by our sister broadcasters at Women on the Line in Victoria.

I have some interesting stuff to play you over the coming weeks and a couple of musical stories to tell BUT I will save them for later. In the meantime a focus this week on old and new sounds from Asia – with a remarkable number of kings and queens of different musical genres (music writers have a lot to answer for
) and some other good new sounds from across the Globe.
We started the show by acknowledging the vision, efforts and staying power of people in Central Australia and beyond to turn the idea of the Desert Peoples Centre into reality and the celebration of the official opening that took place on 29 May at the Desert Knowledge Precinct just outside of Alice Springs.

Today was a celebration of newness in two hemispheres – Queensland Australia and the British folk scene. Brett featured the new album Home – a celebration of new Indigenous musicians and bands from Queensland (his home state) complied by www.qmusic.com.au . We share a love of Seaman Dan who appears on Home. He also featured some tracks from a new favourite - the Byron Bay based reggae band Fyah Walk, last seen at Womadelaide 2010. To learn more go to http://www.myspace.com/fyahwalk.
I had an immigrant moment – must be because it is so green here around Alice Springs – focussing on some new folks sounds coming out of Britain. A long way from the 24 verse dirges and sea shanties sung by someone with a digit shoved firmly in their right ear (I guess dirges are challenging to stay in tune for) at the Grimsby Folk Club in Northern England, which I used to frequent as a teenager. We did have some great performers who did attend, including Vin Garbutt who is currently visiting Central Australia.

Three Chairs of the Board of Management of 8CCC celebrated the news that 8CCC has secured the permanent licence for 102.1FM.
Past Chairpersons, Miguel Ociones and Kate Lawrence celebrated with current Chair, Eli Melky, on Miguel’s long-standing program, Musikang Pilippino, tonight.
Miguel chaired the Board during the challenging time of the station establishing itself (after 20 plus years of broadcasting) as an independent Incorporated body, in new premises, and in applying for a temporary broadcast licence.
Like many present and past Board members, Miguel continues to be actively involved in the station as a volunteer presenter.
Eli is relatively new to community radio, is learning fast and enjoying the journey!
Kate has been involved in the station for some years. Read more in Kate’s profile, and listen to her on Vashti’s Voice, 12 noon on Saturdays.
8CCC has been successful in our application for a permanent licence to broadcast on 102.1FM to Alice Springs and Tennant Creek. Having operated on an annual temporary licence since 2005, we are delighted to have succeeded in this bid.
On hearing the announcement from ACMA, Chair of the Board of Management, Eli Melky said, “Its a great achievement, particularly having won against some stiff competition for the licence.”
Eli said, ”Thankyou to the other members of the Board: Kate Lawrence, Beck Gooderham, Joy Taylor, Nadine Williams and Jeff Kessel without whom the station simply would not have survived. Special mention to Kate, Joy and Bec who prepared a very professional and comprehensive application which clearly provided us with the best possible chance to succeed.”
“Thanks also to the presenters and other volunteers, past Board members and staff, all of whom have helped the station since 2005-6 when we became an incorporated body, moved to Eastside and gained the temporary broadcasting licence. with our permanent licence, we now have a stronger platform to build our future in Central Australia.”
There is no better time to show your continued support of community radio in the Centre by renewing your membership or sponsorship now.
And of course tune in for your favourite programs on 102.1FM and check out the new programs and new broadcasters in our latest program schedule.
